The contractor who designed our septic system came by the house recently.  While he was there, I asked him about dishwasher detergents.  I particularly like Cascade Platinum Dishwasher Pods.  I like them because, combined with a rinse agent, they leave my dishes cleaner than anything else I’ve tried.  I was hoping that I could continue to use them in my new home.  The label does say “Safe for septic tanks” and “Phosphate free”.

The answer:  “Just about anything you would put into your dishwasher is going to work just fine with this septic system.”  His main concern for our system was chlorine bleach.

But, if you still have your doubts about using a mainstream product for whatever reason, ecover, Seventh Generation, and Mrs. Meyer’s all make dishwasher packs, too.
